Pierre Rode

Air Varié

Pierre Rode (1774-1830), well known by serious violinists for his virtuosic 24 Caprices, composed almost exclusively for the solo violin. One of Rode's few contributions to chamber music is his Air varié, Op. 10 for violin and piano. Here, the theme is heavily ornamented and serves as an excellent vehicle for variation. This transcription serves as an excellent resource for saxophonists seeking to perform music that reflects the early classical period, combined with ornamentation that is deeply embedded from the baroque. Further, saxophonists will gain considerable technique grappling with a sample of virtuosic figures that exemplify so clearly Rode's own personal performance style.
