Written when she was only 18, Lili’s Nocturne was completed in just two days. Originally written for flute or violin and piano, Nocturne begins as a slow and meditative work that gradually develops into a more powerful and insisting force that results in a beautifully soaring melody, then, only to return as quickly as it had initially departed to a feeling of calm and resolution. With the Nocturne, Boulanger’s combination of lush chromatic harmonies and a simple but cleverly twisting melodic line is typical of her unique and highly original composing style.
